visual and sensory anthropology

We approached the sensory anthropology section of the journal with the broad aim of developing a space in which authors could challenge the norms of anthropological representation and presentation in a creative but critical way. For us this meant developing the spaces left marginal by the dominance of textual and academically explanatory representa- tion to allow for more alternative and sensory approaches. The emphasis on the creative and the visual is not held at the expense of more political or ‘rigorous’ approaches to anthropology, we think it is precisely the opposite; finding alternative methods of presentation and scholarship are central to challenging the processes of learning and knowing that we are all engaged in. We hope the articles in this section provide a way of exploring your own learning, keep your mind open and enjoy.
